What makes us different from other singles groups is that we sponsor general meetings on the second Monday of the month in a Spring Series (March-June) and a Fall Series (September-November) at a central location (Oakland). Usually we have a speaker or some participation activity. The topics have ranged from intellectual things such as historical talks, to practical things such as identity theft or getting rid of clutter, to fun things such as dance lessons or sessions about dating and relationships.
We love to go out and eat and try new places. We schedule monthly "Out and About Dinners" at a variety of restaurants in different parts of the city or suburbs. General procedure is separate checks with cocktails at 6:30 and dinner at 7:00 PM.
We love to dance. Our most elegant and largest event of the year is our Holiday Dinner Dance in December at a local country club. We usually have attendance numbering 85-90 and we encourage our gentlemen to extend their dance invitations to all the ladies present. In addition, we periodically schedule informal events at places that offer dancing. Some even feature lessons!
We also usually have a monthly get together over happy hour that we call our "Speakeasy" where we meet and socialize at different popular spots and enjoy great beverages and appetizers.
We love sports and outdoor events. In the summer months we scheduled Saturday morning walks at various parks in the area. We like back yard picnics as well as those in a park. And almost every summer we enjoy a baseball game together. Every winter includes a Super Bowl Party.
We love to go to local places together. Naturally we have attended the Science Center, Phipps Botanical Conservatory, the Aviary, and the Senator Heinz Regional History Center. During the sultry summer months we like to gather and enjoy music at the First Friday at Frick concerts. Pittsburgh is certainly filled with musical, theater, and other fine arts groups or cultural venues from which to choose.
We have two special interest groups that meet about once a month in someone's home. First is the Video Discussion Group that views a movie together. This experience generates some interesting questions and discussion. And of course everyone brings a little snack to share. The size of the group varies from 10 to 20, depending on the size of the hostess' TV viewing room. So reserve early!
For those who like to exchange views on deeper philosophical issues, we have our Thought Exchange Group (TEG). The group decides on the topic for the next meeting and a moderator guides the discussion. Some recent topics include what we want in an ideal partner, what makes a joke funny, health care issues in the next election, and immigration. If you want to have a meaty discussion with other people, this is the place.
But most of all we love our house parties. About once a month, one of our members graciously volunteers to open his or her home to us. Parties are usually attended by 25-50 people, depending on the capacity of the hostess. The event can vary from a Sunday brunch to a catered pig roast to a Halloween party complete with costumes and games. Sometimes the card or bridge players gather after dinner. Other times the singers gather round the piano. And of course the conversationalists are always in play.
The cost is minimal, usually $3 sent to the hostess in advance to pay for paper supplies and the entree, with everyone bringing a side dish or appetizer. WHAT MARVELOUS FEASTS THESE EVENTS TURN OUT TO BE! On other occasions the cost is a little more, such as $6 - $10, when the participants do not bring any food and the hostess does it all.
As you can see, we plan a wide variety of programs not only to please everyone's personal interests, but also we hope you will expand your interests as well. It's always fun to learn something you didn't know before! Our events are open to all singles, so you are welcome to attend any club functions before deciding to join. We invite you to bring along one or more friends. All we ask is that you notify the host or hostess in advance, especially for restaurants or house parties where seating may be limited.
